Oh yeah, this place is good. Our friends Chamath and Bridgette took us here - they told us it is the third time they've been there that week! We've eyed this place for a couple of years but always end up going elsewhere because it is hard to park in the mission, and the lines extend way out the door when we walk past.

We ended up going on a Sunday night when parking was relatively easy, and the line, although long, still had us seated in 10 minutes. We opted for the 4 course tasting menu so that we could try more things - the courses are smaller sized than usual. The dosas were good; I especially liked the coconut based dipping sauce. But the lamb curry was just outrageously flavorful and delicious. We will be back for sure.

Cobb's Comedy Club

Category: Comedy Clubs
Neighborhood: North Beach/Telegraph Hill

4 star rating
 01/26/2008
My wife and I went on a double date to Cobb's last night with some friends. I was listing to Energy 92.7 on the way to work and heard that John Oliver from "The Daily Show" was headlining, so we got tickets online. It seems like Cobbs has some sort of promotional tie in with 92.7 as there was signage everywhere and a booth where you could get 92.7 fridge magnets and keyrings and the like.

John Oliver was hilarious; the intro act was solid; the MC wasn't bad either. Like other comedy clubs there is a two drink minimum to make sure that you're a little buzzed and more likely to laugh, but that wasn't really necessary, the guys were genuinely funny.

There are two shows per night on Friday and Saturday; one at 8pm and another at 10:15. On a rainy night like last night, make sure you go to the early show! You can get in as early as 6pm and order dinner if you want, whereas the late show has to wait in a line outside (in the pouring rain) while the early show finishes up.

We showed up around 7:15/7:30 for the 8pm show and got seats towards the back of the ground floor, but it doesn't look like there are any "bad seats". Good sightlines to the stage from everywhere in the building and it isn't all that big so you can get a good view from anywhere.

Food is fine (it isn't the reason you go to a comedy club) and drinks are night club prices, but all in all a good time.

XMA World Headquarters

I walked into this place the other day and it looks really cool. They have martial arts training, acrobatics training, trampoline training - you can even learn to do the "wire work" that they use in the martial arts movies to fly around. It looks like the instructors really know what they are doing.

I'm a beginner and haven't really done martial arts before, but they had classes at my level, all the way up to training for professionals. One of the other guys I met there was a professional stuntman and another was in Cirque du Soleil.

I bounced on the trampoline, learned how to do a forward sumersault into the foam pit, and learned some kicks on the heavy bag. It was more fun than i've had in years!

Mike Chat, the guy who runs the place, is a 7 times world champion and has been on a bunch of movies and TV shows. He is also a super nice guy.

My wife took me here. She never eats red meat - except for Portillo's burgers. I had the Italian beef and it was excellent with the sweet peppers. Greasy, messy, excellent fast food

My wife and I and two friends flew in to Chicago this weekend specifically to eat here. After reading the reviews and hearing about Grant Alchatz's tongue cancer, we figured that we should make sure that we ate there soon. It didn't disappoint. We did the 12 course tasting menu with wine pairings and over the course of 4 hours had a fantastic meal. My favorites included the wagyu beef covered in pine leaves and the "pumpkin pie" served skewed on a burnt oak branch, but it was all just a delight. Service was pleasant, informative, always there when needed but in the background the rest of the time.

Great breakfast option. The quiche is excellent, as are the baked egg sandwiches. The croissants and other baked goods are also very good. Lines move quickly, even on the weekend. Most people seem to grab their food to go, so if you're just a couple you can often grab a couple of stools at the counter.

The secret to this place is to eat in the lounge. Usually you don't need a reservation during the week, even at 8pm. You can also order a la carte so you don't get stuck with the pricey prix fixe menu. The staff tends to be very attentive and decorative to boot.

Our first trip here was to eat in the many room and it was good but as others have noted, a little "old" for us. We've since been back a couple of times on a walk in basis and had excellent meals there.

Hing Lung Restaurant

My wife and I wandered in for a late lunch this Sunday around 2pm. The place was still packed, and with Chinese people - always a good sign. I think I counted two Caucasians in the whole place; the SF cliche of the white guy with his hot asian girlfriend.

I had the Congee and fried bread and a papaya milkshake, she had pan fried crispy noodles. Both were delicious and way more than we could eat, and the total bill was around $17.

As other reviewers have commented, the place is a little messy and the service can be a bit slow (although not outrageously so). But that would be missing the point - you come here for the authentic food. If you want Americanized Chinese food go to Panda Express.

Aqua

Just came back from a good dinner at Aqua with my wife. We were able to get a table at short notice, perhaps because its a Monday night. Although you can order a la carte if you sit at the bar, all the tables are prix fixe only. I had the yellowtail to start, which was excellent. She had the Langoustines - also very good. Her Sturgeon Pastilla was so meaty that it almost had the consistency of chicken - surprising for fish. My John Dory was decent but not outstanding. The portion sizes are reasonable but dessert is almost a bridge too far. My favourite was the peanut butter creme brulee.

Crowd is a bit older and kinda suity - i suppose unsurprising given that its right in the financial district.

A worthwhile meal if you can stroll in early in the week

My friend Jackie Ortega started this business so I can't be completely objective. But I think its fantastic - you can either take a class on a particular craft (knitting, sewing  -including survival sewing - good for guys like me, jewelry making, candle making, natural dye making (!!), etc etc) or you can just drop by to use their equipment and work on your own projects. Classes are small, intimate and friendly, the instructors are very knowledgable and helpful. The place is always clean, well lit and inviting. Parking on the street can be hard but there is a garage on Polk and Bush which charges about $3.25 an hour
